Biostatistics and Ethics

Five steps, in order. And one of them contradicts what almost everyone tells you: UWorld is not good enough for biostats.

Biostats is the most reliably tested, most reliably neglected block on Step 1. People do the same two things — memorise the formulas cold, then grind UWorld biostats questions — and both are wrong in the same way. Neither one teaches you the concept.

Step 1 · Understand First Aid before you memorise it

Open the biostats pages in First Aid and decode them. Not memorise — decode. Sensitivity and specificity are not two formulas to hold in your head; they are two different questions the exam is asking about the same 2×2 table.

The mistake: learning the formulas cold and hoping the vignette announces which one it wants. It never announces. That is the entire trick of a biostats question.

Step 2 · The First Aid Guide + the free HY Biostats PDF

Run those pages through the First Aid Guide alongside the High-Yield Biostats PDF. Together they give you, on the page itself:

A line-by-line explanation of what each line actually means
MCQs on that exact page, so you test the concept the moment you read it
High-yield videos already attached to the topic — no hunting YouTube

Why this order matters. Every biostats question is a concept wearing a number. Decode the concept first and the arithmetic becomes trivial. Do it the other way round and you will get the arithmetic right on the wrong quantity.

Step 3 · AMBOSS, not UWorld — for biostats and ethics

This is the unpopular part: UWorld biostats is not good enough. It is a superb question bank for almost everything else, and this is the exception. Its biostats coverage is thin, and its ethics coverage is thinner.

Use AMBOSS for both. AMBOSS treats biostatistics and ethics at a genuinely deeper level — more of the edge cases, more of the reasoning, and ethics handled as communication rather than as rules to recite.

Do biostats and ethics together, in the same window. They are tested the same way: a scenario, and a judgement about what the scenario actually asks.

Step 4 · The Neil Randy series — both playlists

Then the Neil Randy high-yield videos. Both playlists, and people miss the second one:

The long-form playlist — the full concepts, worked through
The YouTube Shorts playlist — the same material in rapid recall form, which is what makes it stick before a form

Step 5 · NBME Series Anki for biostats — in the revision phase

Not now. In revision. Run the biostats cards from the NBME Series deck during your revision window, when the concepts are already built and what you need is retrieval speed under time pressure.

Notice what is missing. No third question bank. No separate biostats textbook. No formula sheet to laminate. Four resources and a running order, and three of the four are free.
